|“||I have seen the dark shadows moving in the woods and I have no doubt that whatever I have resurrected through this book is sure to come calling for me.||”|
— Raymond Knowby's last words
Together with his wife, Annie, and associate professor Ed Getley, he went on an archeological expedition to the Sumerian ruins of Castle Kandar, where he discovered the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, and the Kandarian Dagger.
Raymond Knowby was presumably a decent man before discovering the Necronomicon, but after acquiring the book, he became seduced by its power and summoned the Kandarian Demon which possessed his wife Henrietta Knowby. Realizing what he had done, he sought to save his wife, however, his methods were shown to be dark as he planned on essentially sacrificing an innocent life, intending for the demonic spirit to be transferred from Henrietta to Tanya, the innocent victim.
- In the original script for The Evil Dead, Professor Knowby's first name was Julian instead of Raymond. He was also a professor of Egyptian Mythology at the fictional Dextin University.
