Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash was a six-issue comic crossover series published by WildStorm Productions and Dynamite Entertainment in 2008. Based on a screenplay by Jeff Katz, the series was written by James Kuhoric and featured artwork by Jason Craig, and serves as a sequel to the 2003 film Freddy vs. Jason.

Plot Synopsis[]

It's been five years since the bloody showdown between Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees at Camp Crystal Lake, and though Jason emerged as the victor in their climactic battle, Freddy's spirit still lingers. Trapped within the confines of Jason's mind, Freddy manipulates the mute slasher through his dreams, sending him out on a quest to recover a copy of the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis stored in the cellar of the old Voorhees home.

Meanwhile, the newly-opened Forest Green S-Mart Supercenter has called in an expert in housewares to help with the holiday rush (as Christmas is right around the corner), and the "rookie crew" is in dire need of assistance. Perhaps in a twist of fate, S-Mart has dispatched their finest head of housewares from their Detroit location: Ash Williams. No sooner than Williams pulls in the parking lot do things get bloody, and Jason makes his first public appearance in years. Just as soon as he appeared, Jason disappears back into the woods after killing three teenage girls, prompting Ash to inquire from his new S-Mart co-workers about the Crystal Lake Killer.

After coming to the conclusion that the Necronomicon is responsible for the creation of an undead killing machine like Jason, Ash decides to explore the Voorhees house on his own, only finding that several of his youthful co-workers have decided to head to the mansion for one last party before the home is demolished in the coming days. While Williams sneaks into the cellar to begin his search, the orgy upstairs turns into a massacre as Jason arrives. Ash runs upstairs as screams ring out through the house, rescuing a young woman named Bree from sharing the same bloody fate as her friends. While Ash and Bree are driven to safety by another S-Mart employee named Caroline, they're not out of danger yet, as Jason follows them back to the S-Mart Supercenter.

Another slaughter unfolds in the store, and soon Jason recovers the Necronomicon Ash had escaped with. Returning to his shanty in the woods, Freddy uses the Ex-Mortis to escape Jason's mind and manifest himself in the world of the living. With the Book of The Dead in his possession, Freddy studies it's blood-inked pages to upgrade his dream manipulation powers.

Ash and the S-Mart crew have retreated to a quiet suburban home to formulate a new plan of stopping Jason, only for Ash to fall asleep and find himself at the mercy of Freddy in the Dreamworld (which has taken on the form of the old Knowby cabin), discovering for himself what kind of power Krueger holds there. Though others in the group are not as fortunate enough to wake from their dreams, Ash and the remaining crew head back to S-Mart to stock up on supplies before heading back to the Voorhees house for the final showdown to recover the Ex-Mortis.

Coming face-to-face with Freddy in the real world, Ash learns that Krueger has already imbued himself with the book's power. Though Ash escapes after Jason comes to confront the double-crossing Freddy (having previously been promised by Freddy that he would fix his disfigurement after getting the book), Voorhees is forced to battle through an onslaught of resurrected victims he had slaughtered years prior.

Freddy catches up with Ash and Caroline in the woods, creating a dream version of his beloved former home 1428 Elm Street. Inside, the three-way showdown between Freddy, Jason, and Ash finally begins. The battle grows more intense with each swing, and eventually, the dream house comes crumbling down, and the fight continues back in the cold snow of Camp Crystal Lake. Eventually, amid the chaos, Caroline opens the rift to send Freddy to the dimension of the Deadites, and Jason is crushed by Ash's Oldsmobile and sent to the bottom of Crystal Lake itself.

With the world saved, Ash can't help but wonder if the greater forces of evil sent twisted fate to set him on this path, to stop Freddy and Jason from abusing their dark power. The dawn of a new day, and Ash and Caroline pack up and begin to drive far away from the bloody past of Crystal Lake. Meanwhile, the frozen Jason trapped beneath the icy lake opens his eyes...

Trivia[]

  • The credits page of each issue and the trade paperback collection state that the full title of this series is "Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash (of Army of Darkness)".
  • In issue one, Caroline can be seen reading a book entitled Castles On Screen, which uses an image of Castle Kandar from Army of Darkness on it's cover.
  • In issue three, during Jason's rampage in S-Mart, a cardboard display advertising action figures based on WildStorm's WildC.A.T.s characters can be seen.

Continuity Notes[]

  • The S-Mart Price Slasher mascot first seen in Army of Darkness: Shop 'Till You Drop Dead can be seen throughout this series.
  • In issue two, Ash is seen carrying a guitar case to conceal his chainsaw. This method was previously seen in Army of Darkness vs. Re-Animator as the method Sugarbaby and Deuce used to smuggle Ash's weapons into Arkham Asylum.
  • Because Ash's standard Homelite XL chainsaw is destroyed by Jason Voorhees in this series, Ash is seen using a different model saw in Army of Darkness: Hellbilles And Deadnecks (which chronologically takes place after both Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash series).
  • Several times throughout the series, Ash mentions the "Deadite Dimension", even mentioning at one point having seen it first hand. This is a reference to the events of Army of Darkness vs. Re-Animator, where Ash is pulled into the Mirror Dimension in the third issue.
  • The events of this series would later be alluded to in the first issue of the Army of Darkness Vs. Hack/Slash series.

Continuity Errors[]

  • In issue five, Ash laments his failure to save Sugarbaby from the Deadites. Though at the time of the issue's publication Sugarbaby was in fact deceased (having died at the end of the From The Ashes storyline released four months prior), chronologically, Ash would have met the newly-resurrected Sugarbaby following the events of Home Sweet Hell.
